Constitution Center

Washington, DC / SmithGroupJJR

After winning a three-month design competition, SmithGroup worked carefully with the Owner and an extensive consulting team to renovate Constitution Center and transform it into a 21st-century federal workplace that is highly secure and very sustainable. The design team maintained the building’s original concrete frame to save time and money, but chose to replace the ribbed marble façade with a blast-resistant glass curtainwall to ensure no employee is further than 45 feet from a natural light source at any time. The building features the first large-scale use of a chilled beam HVAC system. Other energy-saving measures include motion and daylight detectors to monitor lights, windows that automatically dim to prevent daytime heating, and converting the concrete courtyard into a park to absorb rainwater.
