Washington, DC / McKissack & McKissack
This national memorial to the slain civil rights leader is located adjacent to the Tidal Basin, across from the Jefferson Memorial. The memorial will evoke the memory and spiritual presence of Dr. King. Natural elements—stone, water and trees—are used to underscore the themes of democracy, justice, hope and love. The specifications included requirements for six different types of stone and six different stone finishes, as well as for the incised and carved inscriptions in the stone walls.
