Phillip Merrill Center, Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Annapolis, MD / Smith GroupJJR

Internationally acclaimed as a model for energy efficiency, high performance and water conservation, the Phillip Merrill Center serves as an icon for sustainable design. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation wanted its new headquarters to be the most environmentally sensitive building possible, one that would be regarded as a pioneering model and provide their employees with a high-quality workspace. The headquarters, which was the first to receive the LEED platinum rating, included such features as construction waste recycling, low-VOC adhesives and sealants, recycled gypsum board, pervious paving, geothermal ground source heat pumps, natural ventilation, composting toilets, rainwater catchment and reuse, solar panels, solar domestic hot water, and native landscaping.
